Oral history interview with Ruth Nelleson , 2007 October 3.

Ruth Nelleson contracted polio when she was a toddler. She describes the effects of being isolated from her family while in the hospital; having to have surgeries at age 4 to manage a foot problem; wearing special orthopedic shoes paid for by the March of Dimes; and coping with being different from her school peers. She describes being an avid horseback rider later in life and how hip replacement surgery following a riding accident actually improved her polio-damaged leg.

The State Library of Iowa hired Kate Scott to coordinate an oral history project to document the history and impact of polio in Iowa.
